Listen, I don’t follow pro football anymore, I know nothing about him except what everyone knows - he’s a Christian.
If he’s ever said he’s specifically praying for a win, that’s one thing (although we could have a conversation about prayer as energy and a positive force) but as far as I know, no one knows exactly what he’s praying. The fact that he’s a Christian seems to mean it’s open season for mockery.
Two points:
- When a public figure - or any figure, for that matter - brings something sacred and private out into the open in an ostentatious manner, they are opening the door for this kind of thing. Sarah Palin does the exact same kind of thing with her children - she uses them as props on a political stage one day, then complains when people talk about her family life the next. The world doesn’t work like that; when you shove something into the public arena, the public gets to comment on it. If something is important to you, then you should protect it, and keep it sheltered from the storm. Sacred things deserve at least that much.
- Tim Tebow’s religion even commands him to pray in private, or expect to be scorned (Matthew 6-6). Either he doesn’t actually know very much about the religion he so openly professes to love, or he’s a hypocrite.
If you want public praise, you have to be willing to accept public scorn. It’s part of the bargain. Tebow has to play by the same rules as everyone else, regardless of what religion he follows.
