Pardon me, but this is bullshit.  If you want to compare the United States Federal Government to a family, then you damn well better mention that the family would have several hundred trillion dollars in its savings account. And mention the fact that the family is such a huge part of the world economy that it is effectively borrowing money at a negative interest rate on 15 year loans. I’ve pointed it out a hundred times - people who talking about the national debt are doing so because it sounds scary to people who don’t understand all the details. It’s a cheap and easy way to score political points.  And even if it actually was a big deal? Worrying about it when you are faced with 9% unemployment and millions of families who can’t afford to pay their mortgage is just asinine.
