Exactly right.
The people who actually profit from war would like nothing more than to keep voters insulated and unaware of how horrifically brutal and soul-crushing combat truly is. Here in the US, our wars are fought by a tiny subset of the population, and the vast majority of voters live their day-to-day lives without the slightest bit of sacrifice or discomfort - out of sight, out of mind. I’d be willing to bet you a free lunch that we’d have been out of Afghanistan and Iraq years ago if even a third of the voting public was forced to truly contemplate the reality of their children going off to fight.
