Project Idea: rebuild Tumblr with a backchannel...
Sort of like the Ask feature, but with a traditional inbox featuring threaded conversations, and the ability to post part or all of a conversation. It would also be incredibly nice to be able to send a message directly from my dashboard, rather than having to navigate to a webpage.

My guess is that most people in this country simply “inherit” whatever faith they have from their parents and community. They never study it or question it as kids, and by the time they reach adulthood most people are too busy to even think about it all that much. Agnostics and atheists, on the other hand, tended to do well on the study because they most likely DID take time to look...

The List (Part V)
Things That Make Me Crazy  The next-door-neighbor’s noisy AC when I’m sitting on my back deck Discovering my book is at the other end of the house when I want to read Remembering that someone you once shared a life with really has moved on Overly loud people in quiet places Things That Don’t The next-door-neighbor’s propensity for wearing short-shorts pretty much all...

So, this is about the greatest webpage trick ever →
chartier: “Remember: it’s cooler if you make your own sound effects.” Holy cow, this just may be the coolest toolbar bookmark ever. You get to play Asteroids and blow up webpages. It was particularly fun on the Facebook.

President Obama, when asked what music he’s into these days:  “My iPod now has about 2,000 songs, and it is a source of great pleasure to me. I am probably still more heavily weighted toward the music of my childhood than I am the new stuff. There’s still a lot of Stevie Wonder, a lot of Bob Dylan, a lot of Rolling Stones, a lot of R&B, a lot of Miles Davis and John...

Truthful Tuesday
I hate to be negative, but I can’t really bring myself to like Ryan Adams. I do like similar artists; I love Wilco and Jay Fararr’s stuff. Uncle Tupelo and the Jayhawks were on endless repeat in my Subaru during the 1990s. Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris both own a small piece of my soul. But Ryan Adams? He leaves me cold. I did buy a Whiskeytown CD one time, though.

Notes on Breakfast
Everyday is Monday once you’ve gotten toast crumbs in your butter. At least until you open another tub. I love orange juice more than an adult really should. I waited much to long to figure out that you should always use olive oil when cooking eggs. There’s no crime in starting fresh coffee, even if there is another cup left in the pot.

They’ll drive you crazy, they’ll drive you insane. Good morning, Tumblrfolk. Enjoy your Sunday, OK? And take a moment to appreciate your cider mills and donuts and hayrides. They may not always be around. Just ask Danielle and Richard.

Be careful of them in the dark. Good mornin’ Tumblr.  Two people from my high school graduating class - Tim and Kim Drew - married several years back. From all accounts they loved each other, but they walked a rocky road together. They had a couple of kids, and struggled through life like the rest of us. Several months ago, they separated. Yesterday, they were both found dead in the home...

The odds against finding someone you want to spend time with (and who is located somewhere in the same general area code) are just staggering. All I can think about is how good I had it before, how stupid I was to let it go, and how much I’d appreciate it if one of you would just shoot me dead now.

I was eating cottage cheese and peaches for breakfast when I saw something in the bowl that was neither cottage cheese nor a peach. Without thinking, I stuck my finger in the bowl, trying to fish whatever it was out. Yep. I’m feeling about my whey for things.

alinasmith: “If the military’s unjust policy is not repealed in the lame-duck session, there is another way out. The Obama administration can choose not to appeal Judge Phillips’s ruling that the policy is unconstitutional, and simply stop ejecting soldiers. But that would simply enable lawmakers who want to shirk their responsibility. History will hold to account every member of Congress ...

You're just not getting it, are you?
Just got this month’s issue of the Atlantic Magazine. The Editor’s Note covers the lead article on how the Boomer Generation set out with lofty goals, but too often settled for the easy way out, and how the Boomers may yet justify their falling short by doing good as they settle into retirement.  The response to the first letter to the editor? A billionaire yuppie justifies building a...
